Perm school children have welcomed
"Literary Express from London"
A series of events, dedicated to the UK-Russia year of culture,
have started in Perm. Children are encouraged to participate
in creative workshops at the Perm City Library N35 and to
learn about English literature in a form of play.
Year 2014 was announced the United Kingdom-Russia year of
culture. The "Literary Express" project was created with the
support of the Department of Culture and Youth Policy. This
project goes beyond the boundaries of a regular textbook and
encourages children to read more. After the workshops children
take a book and read about characters they were listening
stories about.
Events take place during school hours and leisure time. Fourteen
guided tours have been planned for now, but the number can
change upon schools' request. Workshops vary in form according
to children's age. Younger kids learn about Winnie-the-Pooh
and the older ones about William Shakespeare. The author
plans to familiarize children with not only popular authors,
but also with less-known ones. The first audiences for the
project were students of Perm Gymnasium N4, named after Kamensky
brothers. They attended a workshop on "The Cuckoo Clock" by
Mary Louisa Molesworth.
"Our "Literary Express" will bring guests, who write books
for children, - said the author and the host of the project,
a highly professional librarian and English children books
translator Ekaterina Gladkikh. Our aim is not only to teach
kids, but also encourage them to learn about English literature
and find something for themselves in it, something they can
fall in love with".
