"Who knows? Maybe, great minds and
rare talents will be born on the Kama's wild banks... and
they will cross the whole field of sciences with giant steps..."
K. Batyushkov, a poet, tells that these words were said to
Montesquieu by the Prince Kantemir, the Russian ambassador
at the court of Louis XV.

A thick book could be written about Perm's
scientists, teachers, medical people, chroniclers, inventors.
They have always included devotees and enthusiasts. Such was
Dr. Fyodor Ch. Gral who headed the city hospital in 1798 to
1818 and treated all Perm, often free of charge. Moreover,
he regularly inspected villages in Perm environs. Nowadays
Perm doctors are honoured with the Gral Prize Diplomas for
their devoted work in medicine. Such was P. I. Pichugin who
founded the first children hospital in Perm. Such was E. P.
Serebrennikova, an ophthalmologist. Thousands of students
went through the school of E. A Wagner, the Academician and
famous surgeon. At present the most difficult operations are
performed by his pupils. In 1997 two surgeons, Profs A. S.
Denisov and V. A. Bruns were awarded the State Prizes of Russia.
Profs I. P. Koryukina and M. A. Krasovitskaya got awards for
their solving environmental problems.
Pedagogical traditions in Perm are as deep and prominent as
medical ones. Taking over the post of the Director of classical
school and all schools for the poor in Perm in 1844, I. F.
Gratsinsky raised funds for constructing the classical school
building and providing poor students with grants. At present
the situation directors and teachers of Perm schools got into
may be even more hard. However, they search not only for funds
but also for the enlightenment ways of their own.

relativity theory and offered a new mathe matical model for
the universe. Prof. P. N. Chirvinsky contributed to determining
the che mical composition of the Earth globe and founded a
new science - palaeohydrology. Two new branches of geology,
palaeontology and karst studies, were started in Perm. The
Perm geological school - P. M. Preobrazhensky, G. A. Maksimovich,
P. K. Chudinov and others - is world-known.
There is also the Perm biology school launched by A. G. Genkel,
A. A. Zavarzin, V. N. Beklemishev. There is the Perm archaeology
school- N. N. Novokreshchennykh began excavations near the
village of Gladyenovo and passed 24 000 items to Perm Scientific-Industrial
Museum. F. A. Volegov, A. E. and F. A. Teploukhovs continued
his activities and set up the unique Perm animal style collection.
Then O. N. Bader, V. A. Oborin... We should also mention the
Perm ethnography school - G. N. Chagin and his colleagues
restlessly and enthusiastically restore and collect the folk
lore of Perm region. We should mention the mathematical schools'
founders I. M. Vinogradov and S. N. Chemikov, physicists I.
